Kiosk Scanis a fast and fully automated ID and passport scanner designed for data entry applications. The scanner’s low profile and metal case make it ideal for integration with self-serve type kiosks, vending machines and other service desks. Accuracy and efficiency combined with ease of use greatly improves customer handling in various applications where reading and checking ID is required.
The scanning process automatically starts when the document is placed on the reader. Several, high resolution images are captured, processed, and even the glossy reflections caused by laminated documents are removed for the best OCR results. Within two seconds the OCR data, bar code data and authentication checks are available. This saves a lot of time – approximately 2-3 minutes per customer – and greatly improves the accuracy of the data compared to manual input. Maintenance-free operation is ensured by the no-moving-part design. The scanner operates on a single USB; no external power supply is required. For optimal performance, this device must be installed in an area with no exposure to direct light source or excessive glare.

Kiosk Scan features full page ID-1, passport and visa MRZ scanning, 1D/2D barcode reading from paper based documents and mobile phones, with LED-based visible white and IR illumination, which are triggered by automatic document detection and resulting in high-resolution 500 PPI imaging.
The device – specifically designed for kiosk integration – is powered by and communicates via a single USB connection and utilizes OVD visualization and Reflection Removal (RR) technology to aid OCR and verification. Kiosk Scan is compatible with Windows and Linux, uses standard TWAIN interface and comes with comprehensive development support in C/C++, C#, Visual Basic, .NET, Java.

- Identity- or travel document reading and authentication rely on specifically developed software that is capable of performing optical character recognition (OCR), barcode reading, data recording and security verifications; as well as on scanner hardware that executes illuminations in various wavelengths, captures the necessary images and signals from any embedded RFID, or optionally, from contact chips and magnetic stripes. Hardware and software must work in a well-defined unison to perform a complete identification check and data recording in one-to-two seconds by a qualified ID scanning device.
Reading, data and image capture, and authentication automatically begin when the identity document is placed on the device’s scanning surface. Depending on the specific model, different levels of ID verification and data recording are performed during this time.
Many scanners are designed to complete OCR not just on the machine readable zone (MRZ) but also on the visual inspection zone (VIZ) of the documents. During the OCR, the reading device captures the MRZ, VIZ and barcode data, and includes it in its output along with a record of the recognized document type. The recorded characters are forwarded to compile the necessary identity data and are also used to assist with security mechanisms such as checksum functions.
Further authentication is made possible by visible, infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) illumination and image rendering; and by comparing the barcode data, holographic security features and ID photo with the digital information stored on the document’s chip or magnetic stripe – depending on the type of ID verified and scanner used. The displayed results can summarize the different steps of verification procedure, OCR checksum, VIZ and barcode reading and optionally the passive and active authentications performed on the e-passport’s or other document’s RFID.
While ARH’s ID and e-passport scanners autonomously manage the document reading and security procedures with the help of their provided software development kit (SDK), furnishing the necessary database for ID certification is normally the task of the partner systems integrator who develops the customized application for the specific end user. The SDK also offers several demo application, but since every project is different in its scope and requirements, the integrators are encouraged to provide the vital user interface for the given project that involves document reading and authentication.
