FULL PAGE ID AND PASSPORT READER FOR SPEED AND SECURITY

Combo Smart

scanners are a family of compact, full-page, multi-purpose passport and ID readers that provide automatic, accurate data extraction and document verification. The documents’ printed data is extracted from the entire page, from MRZ, VIZ, 1D and 2D bar codes. Combo Smart also extracts digital data from RFIDs, contact smart chips and from magnetic stripes. The available multiple illumination sources are visible white, IR and UV. The reader renders the captured images glare-free with a patented Reflection Removal and displays the OVD markings in a separate image. The device's modular design allows 32 different configurations, options to be powered by USB or regular current, and OEM versions are also available.
Combo Smart offers:
  • Automatic document detection and fast authentication; image capture, data reading in a single step
  • Accurate RFID chip reading regardless of chip position in passport
  • Sophisticated ID verification checks: data cross-checks, B900 and UV dull checks, face photo vs. RFID DG2 and OVD signs visualization

Combo Smart provides solution for common problems by:
  • Reading and verifying ICAO and non-ICAO IDs
  • Easy P&P implementation without special training
  • Micros Opera™ interface support, AssureID™ compatibility and several other management system software

Combo Smart is ideal for:
  • Simple integration with any existing government or commercial workflow through flexible SDK

Combo Smart provides high-resolution 500 PPI imaging with the help of LED-based visible white, IR and UV illumination. It performs regular 1D and 2D barcode reading from printed documents or smartphone screens, and the scanner’s modular design allows IR, UV, RFID, magnetic stripe or smartcard reading capability.

Combo Smart offers complete RFID reading support for BAC, EAC, EAC2.0, PA, AA, PC/SC interfaces and complies with ISO & ICAO standards, while supports BAC, PACE, EAC, AA and PA as well as CA, TA, BAP and EAP. The device has two auxiliary USB ports (not available for USB-powered versions) to connect external devices and, as optional extras, two additional SAM slots to store digital signatures. Combo Smart is compatible with Windows and Linux, uses standard TWAIN interface and comes with comprehensive development support in C/C++, C#, Visual Basic, .NET, Java.

Identity- or travel document reading and authentication rely on specifically developed software that is capable of performing optical character recognition (OCR), barcode reading, data recording and security verifications; as well as on scanner hardware that executes illuminations in various wavelengths, captures the necessary images and signals from any embedded RFID, or optionally, from contact chips and magnetic stripes. Hardware and software must work in a well-defined unison to perform a complete identification check and data recording in one-to-two seconds by a qualified ID scanning device.

passport reading process Reading, data and image capture, and authentication automatically begin when the identity document is placed on the device’s scanning surface. Depending on the specific model, different levels of ID verification and data recording are performed during this time.

Many scanners are designed to complete OCR not just on the machine readable zone (MRZ) but also on the visual inspection zone (VIZ) of the documents. During the OCR, the reading device captures the MRZ, VIZ and barcode data, and includes it in its output along with a record of the recognized document type. The recorded characters are forwarded to compile the necessary identity data and are also used to assist with security mechanisms such as checksum functions.

Further authentication is made possible by visible, infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) illumination and image rendering; and by comparing the barcode data, holographic security features and ID photo with the digital information stored on the document’s chip or magnetic stripe – depending on the type of ID verified and scanner used. The displayed results can summarize the different steps of verification procedure, OCR checksum, VIZ and barcode reading and optionally the passive and active authentications performed on the e-passport’s or other document’s RFID.

While ARH’s ID and e-passport scanners autonomously manage the document reading and security procedures with the help of their provided software development kit (SDK), furnishing the necessary database for ID certification is normally the task of the partner systems integrator who develops the customized application for the specific end user. The SDK also offers several demo application, but since every project is different in its scope and requirements, the integrators are encouraged to provide the vital user interface for the given project that involves document reading and authentication.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

The identity document readers of ARH currently assist in fast and error-free personal data acquisitions, ID and passport verifications, and quality control applications at several thousand sites around the world. The company’s devices help to make the processing of travelers and employees quick and secure at many airport, border crossings and embassies. Many hotels, banks and even self-service application benefit from the ARH document scanner’s ability to rapidly gather and transfer the necessary identity data for various commercial roles. Document issuing agencies of several governments also use the readers’ ability for final checks prior to releasing the newly issued IDs and passports.

COMPONENTS

ARH identity document reader packages normally contain the following components:
• ID or ePassport reading unit
• Functions libraries
