is a full-page, multi-purpose scanner that provides automatic, accurate data extraction and verification with the ability to read multiple types of identity documents: passports, e-passports, ID cards, visas and driver licenses. The printed data is extracted from the entire page (MRZ, VIZ and 1D & 2D bar codes) while digital data is obtained from contactless (RFID) and contact smart chips. OCR and RFID reading is done in a single step. The standard and enhanced versions of the scanner both possess multiple illumination sources (visible white, IR and UV), hardware-assisted reflection removal (RR) and the optional OVD visualization function.

In order to counteract the most often forged part of passports, the PRMc is capable to optically capture a 960 PPI image of the bearer’s face photo from the scanned document’s data page. The resulting exceptionally high-resolution images in visible white, IR and UV offer more accurate verification and also allow for automatic Jura IPI decryption. The PRMc is ideal for any application from border control and immigration, to security and commercial environments such as banks, hotels and telecom retailers. The scanner’s robust design and its tempered glass reading surface assure flawless functioning in any mission critical operation. PRMc offers high-resolution 475 PPI imaging with the help of LED-based visible white, IR and UV illumination, and optionally, its 960 PPI camera provides 24 bits/pixel color or 8 bits/pixel monochrome in IR passport photo capturing in extended high color fidelity (XCF). It performs hardware-assisted reflection removal (RR) and OVD visualization, regular 1D and 2D barcode reading from printed documents or smartphone screens, and the scanner’s modular design allows IR, UV, RFID, smartcard reading capability, and optionally extended window size up to 130 × 100 mm to read all non-ICAO passports.

Identity- or travel document reading and authentication rely on specifically developed software that is capable of performing optical character recognition (OCR), barcode reading, data recording and security verifications; as well as on scanner hardware that executes illuminations in various wavelengths, captures the necessary images and signals from any embedded RFID, or optionally, from contact chips and magnetic stripes. Hardware and software must work in a well-defined unison to perform a complete identification check and data recording in one-to-two seconds by a qualified ID scanning device.

passport reading process Reading, data and image capture, and authentication automatically begin when the identity document is placed on the device’s scanning surface. Depending on the specific model, different levels of ID verification and data recording are performed during this time.

Many scanners are designed to complete OCR not just on the machine readable zone (MRZ) but also on the visual inspection zone (VIZ) of the documents. During the OCR, the reading device captures the MRZ, VIZ and barcode data, and includes it in its output along with a record of the recognized document type. The recorded characters are forwarded to compile the necessary identity data and are also used to assist with security mechanisms such as checksum functions.

Further authentication is made possible by visible, infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) illumination and image rendering; and by comparing the barcode data, holographic security features and ID photo with the digital information stored on the document’s chip or magnetic stripe – depending on the type of ID verified and scanner used. The displayed results can summarize the different steps of verification procedure, OCR checksum, VIZ and barcode reading and optionally the passive and active authentications performed on the e-passport’s or other document’s RFID.

While ARH’s ID and e-passport scanners autonomously manage the document reading and security procedures with the help of their provided software development kit (SDK), furnishing the necessary database for ID certification is normally the task of the partner systems integrator who develops the customized application for the specific end user. The SDK also offers several demo application, but since every project is different in its scope and requirements, the integrators are encouraged to provide the vital user interface for the given project that involves document reading and authentication.
